Tour routes
Take advantage of our mini guide-book and embark on an unforgettable trip across the Wielkopolska region. The routes have been devised to let you find out about the region’s magic places and to visit LECH Visitors Centre.
Piast dynasty
Embark on a trip tracing the Piast dynasty. Find out about life in Poland ruled by Mieszko I and his son Bolesław Chrobry (10th and 11th centuries). Visit venues in the Wielkopolska region where time has stopped and where linen, hand-woven shirts are the order of the day together with clay bowls, church steeples and large burghs.
Gniezno
Poland’s first capital and one of the country’s oldest cities. Gniezno is most famous for its Gothic cathedral, a gem of Polish architecture. The cathedral’s dungeons host the Romanesque foundations of churches from the times of the first documented rulers of Poland. Every year this unique venue is visited by tourists from Poland and abroad. The cathedral in Gniezno witnessed the ceremonies of coronation of Bolesław Chrobry, Bolesław II the Bold and Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. The cathedral is ornamented with a silver reliquary – St. Adalbert’s coffin and the unique Gniezno Doors ”describing” the saint’s life. The Museum of the Beginnings of the Polish State offers more information on the city’s history.
Ostrów Lednicki
Ostrów Lednicki is an island on Lednickie Lake and one of the most important venues in Poland’s history. At the times of Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry it was among the chief administrative and defence centres in Poland. Józef Ignacy Karaszewski plotted out his historical novel ”Stara Baśń” (An Ancient Tale) in Ostrów Lednicki. From here emperor Otto III, greeted by Bolesław Chrobry, started his walk on scarlet cloth to reach Gniezno. In 1038 the burgh’s fate changed and after Brzetysław of Bohemia’s invasion Ostrów changed into a necropolis of 2 thousand graves. It is among the best preserved mediaeval burial sites in Central Europe. Archeologists have excavated many interesting and unique artefacts there.
Dziekanowice
In Dziekanowice the history of Poland is told by exhibits collected in the Museum of the First Piasts in Lednica. (Dziekanowice 32, 62–261 Lednogóra). The venue is worth visiting to take a trip to the times of Mieszko I, the first Piast ruler, and to find out about the lives of grand rulers and regular mortals.
LECH Visitors Centre
We take a trip from Dziekanowice straight to Poznań to rest after the historical trip. This is where our trip to the times of the first Piasts ends.
